About program

Human resource management is a central function of any organisation. Generally, 50 percent or more of an organization's operating budget is used to pay the salaries of the people who work there. The general objective of the curriculum is therefore to introduce students to the basic principles and techniques of human resource management. The individual courses are based on a practical perspective that combines the contribution of behavioural sciences with the technical aspects of implementing the human resource function in the "real world".

Thus, a basic understanding of human resource management is essential whether the student works in government, financial services, a hospital, a high-tech industry, a retail store, an educational institution, or any other type of organization. The main objective of this program is to demonstrate that human resource management is more than just receiving job applications and maintaining records; it is a central and strategic organizational activity that is increasingly complex and important.

These broad aims can be more accurately defined by examining the specific objectives of the programme of study. Thus, upon completion, the student will be able to appreciate the importance of human resource management as a field of study and as a central managerial function; understand the implications of behavioral science, government regulations, and court decisions for human resource management; be familiar with the elements of the personnel function (e.g., recruitment, selection, training and development, etc.) and know the key concepts and terminology of each element; and apply the principles and techniques of human resource management learned in this course to the discussion of major personnel issues and the solution of typical case problems.
